Needle weaving ideas for kids

Needle Woven Heart

My eight old daughter shows interest towards embroidery and crochet. During her last summer holidays, we were doing few embroidery and crochet projects. As she is busy with her school work now, we can’t find time for those kids of time consuming projects. I thought needle weaving will give her the satisfaction of embroidery. Let us see how we made our needle woven heart.

Materials needed (affiliation links are used)

1.Aida cloth – We happen to have one. Otherwise ordinary cloth will do.

2.Embroidery Floss – We used red and white

3. Needle

Method

1. Draw a heart and do the satin stitch either horizontally or vertically with red floss. Click the link if you would like to check out how to make satin stitch. As you can see my daughter has not covered few holes in the right side of the heart.

2. Change the floss to white.  Let us start with weaving. If the satin stitch is done horizontal, the weaving should be done vertically. If the satin stitch is done vertical, the weaving should be done horizontally. As we have done  cereal box weaving basket earlier, my daughter  is comfortable with the weaving process.

3. Start from one of the ends. Start weaving by going above and below the satin stitch thread. Please refer the picture.

Square or rectangle is pretty simple as the number of satin stitch strands are equal.  As the strands change in heart, it was a little difficult for my daughter to count and weave.

4. Continue weaving till you finish the heart. Needle woven heart is done!

Frankly, it is not a simple project. It takes a lot of concentration and time for an eight year old. But needle woven heart is beautiful.
