Gross motor ideas for kids

A simple game to develop sense of balance

I started playing this simple game with my toddler to develop sense of balance. Then it got extended by both of my daughters.

To play this game, you need only a small ball and various objects to carry the ball around. The aim of the game is to carry the ball from one place to another without dropping in between.

To give her little practice, we started with a bowl and the ball. Carrying the ball in a bowl was pretty simple for her.

Then we moved to a large plate with rim. The plate was heavy for her and the size of the plate added more challenge. But she did manage to bring the ball. She was walking so slow to balance and my elder one commented that she would surely reach within a year. 🙂
Then we moved to a small plate without rim. This was tricky for her but she loved it. She did drop more than once and tried her best to bring the ball. After three attempts, she was able to bring the ball from start to end without dropping. She was proud of herself.

My elder daughter could not resist the fun. To challenge her, I made her walk with the plate in her head.

Even I  joined the fun. I walked with the plate in my head and without holding the plate. Wow! It was a nice experience. My daughter wanted to try without holding the plate. It was tricky!

Seeing that my toddler wanted to carry the ball in her head. I gave her bowl and she happily carried the ball in the head.

Fun!! All three of us thoroughly enjoyed the activity. I wouldn’t have believed if somebody told me that such a simple activity made everyone happy.
