Simple stitching ideas for kids

Embroidered bookmark – An easy project for beginners

Hi Everyone,My eight year old is showing a lot of interest towards embroidery, sewing and crochet. We are making use of the summer vacation to learn the basics of them.

She is a visual learner. Videos teach her better than books. We watched the videos of running stitch, back stitch and lazy daisy.

We found the following videos useful :

1. Running stitch

2. Back stitch

3. Lazy daisy

My daughter practiced the stitches in aida cloth(affiliation link). When she got comfortable, we did this easy project.

Material needed for bookmark: (affiliation links are used)

1. Card stock

2. Pencil

3. Pushpin

4. Needle

5. Embroidery floss / thread / tapestry thread

6. Tacky glue

7. Contact paper(optional)

Method:

1. We folded the card stock in half lengthwise, creased and opened. My daughter drew flowers and border on one part of the fold with the pencil. She punched holes in the design with push pin. Threaded the needle. We used tapestry thread for this project as we did not have embroidery floss then. We used two strands of tapestry thread.

2. She did lazy daisy for the flowers and back stitch for the borders. Stitches were pretty easy for her however she was struggling with threading and knotting.

3. Once she completed the embroidery, she closed the card stock along the fold to hide the backside of the stitches and glued with tacky glue.

4. We covered the bookmark with contact paper for durability.

She is very proud of her creation. It took nearly 3 hours to complete this easy project.
