Book bridge

Building a book bridge

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions are 100% my own!Designing and building a book bridge comes from the brand new book “101 Kids Activities That Are the Bestest, Funnest Ever!” by Holly Homer and Rachel Miller of Kids Activities Blog!

The book is packed with inspiring ideas and colorful pictures. It immediately attracted my eight year old’s attention. She has found few ideas to do for her little sister!  Lets have a peek at one of the activities – Building a book bridge.
Materials Needed :
1. 2 chairs
2. Books in various sizes
Keep the chairs facing each other around 1 feet apart. Encourage the child to build a bridge connecting the chairs. Very simple to set up. Bonus!
My daughter started arranging the books on one side. She thought that it would be easy to construct from one end to another end. But the books at the center were not stable. Then she realized that she had to work on both the sides simultaneously.
She was not paying attention to the weight of the books. She was building with whatever books she could pick. When she kept the heavy book at the center, the bridge collapsed.
Then she started the bridge again with heavy and lengthy books at the bottom and light books at the top. She was building both the side concurrently.
Yes, a very light book at the top completed her bridge.
What kind of activity would be complete without the pretend play? She told that she was a ship crossing the bridge.
She encouraged her sister also to cross the bridge.
Since the bridge was at corner, they moved the chair to the middle of the room, constructed the bridge again and continued their play.
This simple game can be made more challenging by choosing chairs of different heights, testing the strength of the bridge etc. In fact, the authors have given some more interesting modifications which will make this simple game more fun and challenging.
I need not explain that my daughter had not only fun but also learnt math and science.
Why do I like this book?
  • The book has four sections – Boredom busters, crafts, games and simple science which make the navigation easier.
  • All the activities can be done with materials that are already available at home.
  • Each activity has modifications for younger and older kids. Hence can be used for kids of all ages.

Surely there will be mention of this book for few more posts as we have bookmarked a lot of activities to try! This book is surely a keeper. It is available for purchase at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
